Who We Are

The Church of the Redeemer is a member of an international group of churches (a "denomination") called the Evangelical Covenant Church (see that website at www.covchurch.org). The Covenant Church is a Protestant denomination, which means that it is historically linked to the Protestant Reformation and to the Lutheran and Free Church traditions. We strive to remain faithful to our history of spiritual renewal in Christ and to the call of Christ to “make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19,20)

We are a community of Christians from Bowie and its surrounding areas who find tremendous meaning through faith in Jesus Christ. We are not, however, committed only to those already involved in the church. We are committed to pursuing productive ways of reaching out to our community (see Ministry for a sample of those pursuits). The congregation includes young families, retirees, singles, couples, and single parents. Among us there are lifelong Christians as well as people who are brand new to faith, newborn babies, the elderly, and those in between. If you belong in any of these categories (and you do!) you are welcome here.

While there are currently only two Covenant churches in the D.C. metro area, there are about 700 nationwide. In addition, the Covenant Church is involved in mission work in many nations around the world. Our membership outside the United States far exceeds our membership here. This reflects our long-term commitment to Jesus' "Great Commission" - referral above (Matthew 28:18-20)
